An upset occurs when a large underdog wins a match outright. The most involves teams separated by a significant point spread. One of the most historic upsets in history was when 16th seed UMBC Retrievers defeated the 1st overall Virginia Cavaliers in the opening round of the 2018 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball tournament. UMBC closed as +20.5 underdogs and nearly covered the reverse spread.
