The term is most frequently used by [[tout]]s in order to trick new customers entice bettors into buying their picks. The tout may either sell the self-proclaimed lock individually for a large amount, or provide it for free in hopes that it wins and the customer returns to buy more picks. Most sports bettors use the term ''lock in a joking manner '' ironically as no sports bet is guaranteed to win.
