Team total

A team total is a type of bet on how many points an individual team will score in a given match. A wager can be made whether one team's points will be over or under a set amount. Team totals should not be confused with totals, which is a bet on the combined score between both competing teams.

While team total betting markets are less common than moneylines, spreads, and totals they are available at most sportsbooks that offer team props.

How Team Totals Work

Both teams will have individual set team totals for their respective points. Bets can be placed on whether they will score more or less than that set amount.

In the example below the Arizona Cardinals' team total is set at 23.5. A bet on the Over 23.5 would win if Arizona scores 24 or more points. Consequently if Arizona scores less than 23 points the under would win. The amount of points scored by the other team does not affect the grading of a team total wager.

Under 23.5 (-110)

Under 28.5 (-110)

Pushes

If a team scores the same amount of points as their team total then wagers on both the over and under will be graded a push. All initial risks will be refunded to the player's account. In the NBA match below if the Philadelphia 76ers score exactly 108 points then both over and under wagers on the team total will be graded a push.

Grading Team Totals

Most betting sites include overtime scoring when grading a team total. Specific rules regarding team total wagers vary between sports. Below are some common grading policies observed by most sportsbooks.

Baseball

If both listed pitchers do not throw their respective team's first pitch all team totals will be graded no action. Games must go at least 9 innings (8.5 if the home team is leading) for team total wagers to have action. Runs scored in extra innings will count towards baseball team totals.

Basketball

NBA games will require at least 43 minutes of elapsed game time for team total wagers to have action. Other basketball leagues which play four 10-minute quarters require will require 35 minutes for action. Overtime scoring is included when grading basketball team totals.

Football

American football matches require at least 55 minutes of elapsed game time for team totals to have action. Overtime scoring is included when grading football team totals.

Hockey

Hockey matches require a minimum of 55 minutes elapsed game time for team totals to have action. The inclusion of the extra goal scored during overtime or the shootout will count if the market is not restricted to regulation time.

Soccer

Soccer matches must reach full time in order for team totals to have action. Goals scored in stoppage time will count towards the total. Scoring in extra time will not count.
