An upset occurs when a large underdog wins a match outright. The most notable upsets occur when teams that have positive point spreads larger than 20 defeat the favored team. One of the most historic upsets in history was when 16th seed UMBC Retrievers defeated the 1st overall Virginia Cavaliers in the opening round of the 2018 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball tournament. UMBC closed as +20.5 underdogs and nearly covered the reverse spread.
