An under is a bet on the combined number of points or goals scored by both competing teams being less than a set amount. The under and over make up both sides of the total betting market. In order to win a bet on the under both teams must combine for less points than the total.

Bets on the under are usually not popular amongst casual sportsbettors as cheering against scoring plays can be unpleasant.

Example

The total for the NFL match below between the New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens is set at 44.5. A bettor who wagers on the under would win if both teams combine for 44 or less points. A final score of 24-17 Patriots would yield a win on the under.
